Ostrich Egg

Most of the time an ostrich egg will hatch under lights in an aviary, but some aviaries still let the mother hatch her own young. Caring for the eggs is a duty divided between males and females. Males tend to watch over them in the night, while females of the mating group take turns during the daytime. The ostriches' egg measures 17 to 19 cm in length, and 14 to 15 cm in width. It weighs up to 1900 g. Most of the time an ostrich egg will hatch under lights in an aviary, but some aviaries still let the mother hatch her own young. These terrestrial birds tend to form bisexual groups with a complex structure. Males compete for flocks of three to five hens. The mating system of ostriches is rather interesting. Territorial males attract females with a spectacular performance. They tend to flop to the ground and rock from side to side, with their neck banging on their back and wings outstretched. Most of the time an ostrich egg will hatch under lights in an aviary, but some aviaries still let the mother hatch her own young.
