Bird Breeder

A bird breeder will keep his stock in an aviary; most breeders keep their chicks in these cages. The plumage of females is a dull grayish brown. Ostriches live in flocks. The males usually have from two to three females in their family group. They don't make nests; they scoop out a hollow for their eggs. Each egg weighs nearly 3 lbs. The plumage of the ostrich males is glossy black. There are beautiful long white feathers on their wings and tail. Both males and females have bare head, neck and thighs. In some cases these parts of their body are scantily feathered. A bird breeder will keep his stock in an aviary; most breeders keep their chicks in these cages.

Most of the time an ostrich egg will hatch under lights in an aviary, but some aviaries still let the mother hatch her own young.
