Ostriches tend to form bisexual groups with a complex structure. Males compete for flocks of three to five hens. The mating system of ostriches is rather flexible. Territorial males attract females with a spectacular performance. They flop to the ground and rock from side to side, with their neck banging on their back, and wings outstretched.

A territorial male scrapes a nest. The first ostrich female to lie in the nest pairs up with the male. Once divided into mating groups, ostriches may use communal nests to hold anywhere from 15 to 60 eggs. Caring for the eggs is a duty divided between males and females. Males tend to watch over them in the night, while females of the mating group take turns during the daytime.

Ostriches - Eggs

The ostriches' egg measures 17 to 19 cm in length, and 14 to 15 cm in width. It weighs up to 1 900 g. It is quite big, however, it is very small compared to the body size of the bird. The eggs are white to yellowish white in color. The ostrich hen typically lays 10 eggs, and some hens may lay more. On farms, the average egg production is 15-60 eggs per female. In artificial incubators, the eggs stay during 39 days. Eggs of female ostriches take 40 days to hatch.
