Ostriches - Behavior
Ostriches tend to live in flocks of 5 to 50. Flocks occupy territories of 2-15 sq km during the breeding season. Ostriches form the groups of 2-5 members when the breeding season is over. It is a common myth that ostriches hide their heads in the sand to make themselves invisible for the danger. In fact, when startled or threatened, an ostrich tends to feign death. It stretches its long neck along the ground and lies immobile for some time to blend with the surroundings. Ostriches - HistoryHumans have used Ostrich feathers and eggs for many centuries. In the 18th century, when the ostrich's feathers came into fashion, these birds were hunted almost to extinction. In 1833, the business of ostrich farming started to flourish. However, the First World War left the farms crashed. At present, there are a number of farms not only in South Africa, but also in many other countries of the world.
